Effects of construction works on historic bridge

Medieval Bridge – Azerbaijan

This project related to the effects of nearby pipeline construction works on the ruins of a medieval bridge located on part of the Silk Road in western Azerbaijan.

WJM&P were engaged by the environmental experts advising the oil company that intended to install the pipeline.  We carried out a structural appraisal of the condition of the ruins in the light of the proposed works and advised on suitable safeguarding measures both during the works and in the long term.

We visited the site to examine the ruins and discuss our proposals with representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.  The proposals we developed were based on current best practices, taking into account the resources available locally.  The safeguarding measures will be implemented by an Azerbaijani contractor.
